A week in the life of a Consultant
Consultant's week is eight days long. It starts already on Sunday evening.
Sunday
I check my email in the evening to make sure that I have my Monday flight booked as usual.
Monday
I get up at six-thirty in the morning and watch the news while eating breakfast. At half past seven, I take a cab to the airport. I call the Project Manager, my family and read newspaper on the way. My slightly delayed plane takes-off to Estonia at nine. I'm at the client's at half past ten. Until the arrival of my colleagues I'm working on the business plan, which I am responsible for on this project. When the team gets together, we discuss next steps and priorities for the upcoming week and prepare the presentation for tomorrow's workshop with the client's management. We will be looking for measures to improve the profitability of the client's product portfolio. In the afternoon, we send the first version of the presentation to the Partner (co-owner, the highest rank in Roland Berger, partners are usually experts who are in charge of several projects at once) and an hour later we get her feedback. I work on my part of the presentation until late evening. At eleven we head back to the hotel and I go straight to bed.
Tuesday
After a team breakfast in the hotel we all leave to the client's site, where we finalize the presentation for the workshop. During the morning the Partner arrives. Together we have lunch in the Estonian canteen. I eat fish with a funny sounding name. The workshop with the client begins at one and the majority of the board members, including the CEO and the main shareholder of the company are present. After the workshop, the entire team meets with the Partner to discuss the results and the next steps. We decide that it is necessary to develop a change of the client's product portfolio. In the evening I prepare for tomorrow's informal meeting with the CFO, where I will introduce him to the concept of the business plan. We leave for the hotel after ten.
Wednesday
I start the day at nine by doing the final check of the parts of the business plan, which will later be presented to the CFO. The meeting begins at ten and I'm explaining the principles of our plan. CFO listens attentively and I recognize from his responses that he thinks the concept is appropriate. I'm meeting the head of controlling in the afternoon. Together we verify the data and I get answers to some unresolved questions. For the rest of the day I work on incorporating the new insights into the business plan. We are leaving for the hotel after eleven.
Thursday
We have scheduled a meeting for several hours with the CEO and the head of sales for the morning. We discuss possible changes in company's product portfolio. We are trying to find out a way to optimize the portfolio in order to achieve target profitability with the Project Manager after the meeting. I draw several slides on our proposed optimization and send them via email for graphic editing. I call a cab at five and leave for the airport, where I work again. I'm flying to Helsinki at six where I'm changing to Prague. In the cab from Prague Airport I'm talking to my family and friends, discussing plans for the weekend. I get home before nine.
Friday
My day starts in the Prague office with a 9 o'clock conference call with the project team. I continue to develop the business plan and I communicate with the client and the Project Manager via email. After lunch, I call the head of controlling, this time to verify the accuracy of financial data and to ask him for a detailed depreciation schedule. We have another conference call with the team in the afternoon where we map finished tasks and discuss client meetings planning for the next week. I leave the office between six and seven and meet with friends in downtown.
Saturday
I spend Saturday doing sports with friends or colleagues.
Sunday
On Sunday, I devote my time to my family. I check my email in the evening to make sure that I have my Monday flight booked as usual.
